Subjectivity, social ties and modernity (Subjectivité, lien social et modernité – SuLiSoM) conducts original research in clinical psychology and psychopathology, based on the psychoanalytic paradigm - which refers to both a form of epistemology and a method for treating psychological pain.

Psychoanalysis is a theoretical and clinical approach to the individual, the group and the socius; its originality lies in the fact that it takes the unconscious into account. This makes it possible to understand the subject in the singularity of their psychological functioning, their representations, and their culture.

This approach is inductive: it starts from detailed descriptions of discourse and behaviour, which it analyses using qualitative methods, which allow for the hypothesis of the unconscious. Allowing for this hypothesis makes it possible to take into account the unconscious elements of the relationship between the researcher and their research.

SuLiSoM's specific research focuses on the individual and social configurations that are characteristic of modern-day suffering, and aims to provide new avenues of analysis and therapeutic recommendations. This analysis often includes a critical component that aims to highlight the subjective and human cost of the most immediate solutions offered to address this suffering.

All in all, the aim is to consider the way in which psychological care can promote subjectivation, i.e. the expression of individual singularity (as opposed to the normative 'rehabilitation' often put forward today), within the context of contemporary suffering - postmodern isolation, loss of bearings, increasing identity claims, radicalisation, expectations of medicine, etc.

Research topics

Topic 1 - Family clinics

This topic studies the effects of new family configurations linked to social changes (gender representations, early parenthood, etc.), legal changes (e.g. single-sex marriage) and medical developments (medically assisted reproduction - MAR, transsexualism, etc.) on the subjective construction of reality and on parental and marital roles. Examining the effects of socio-legal-medical changes makes it possible both to identify new forms of suffering (related to domestic violence and incest, for example) and to recommend treatment to various professional bodies (concerning MAR, for example).

Topic 2 - Psychopathology, medicine and psychotherapies

The work on this topic focuses both on medical practice and biomedical research (from psychiatry to genetics and immunology), and on psychotherapeutic practice. It seeks to define the nature of mental health care today, both as it is applied in all care relationships and in particular in the medical field (where it plays a leading but often background role), but also in mental health therapy and psychotherapy. This includes borderline issues such as psychosomatics. The various therapeutical approaches in which mental health care is deployed are, therefore, also part of this topic.
